Sheffield patients urged to have their say on treatment

People who receive treatment for secondary breast cancer at Sheffield’s Weston Park Hospital will be invited to have their say.

The hospital, part of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, is working with charities Breast Cancer Now and Breast Cancer Care on the Secondary Breast Cancer Pledge.

The scheme aims to give patients the opportunity to provide feedback on their care through a questionnaire and focus group.

It is hoped that directly engaging patients will help to inform service improvements that can make a real difference to their care.

The Macmillan Breast Cancer Nurse Specialist Team at Weston Park, which includes Jo Beaumont, Linda Rhodes and Jo Davis, will be leading the project on behalf of the hospital.

Jo said: “Taking part in this initiative will enable our team to see the service from our patients’ point of view, and help us develop and improve the service we already provide.

“This is a great opportunity for us to lead the way in improving services for this patient group.”

Secondary breast cancer is cancer that has spread beyond the breast or armpit to other parts of the body, such as the lungs or liver.

It cannot be cured, but it can be treated and controlled, sometimes for a number of years.

The hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in the UK.

It serves patients across the whole of South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire, a population of around .8 million people.
