Sheffield park in running to be named best in UK - and your vote is needed

A Sheffield park which was controversially earmarked to become a floodplain is in the running to be named the best in the UK.

Endcliffe Park in Ecclesall has been nominated for the Fields in Trust UK's Best Park Award, which is voted for by the public.It is one of 14 green spaces in Yorkshire and Humber, and 214 across the country, vying for the plaudit.Members of the public can vote for their favourite before Wednesday, November 9, with the winner due to be announced in a ceremony at Lord's Cricket Ground later this month.Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg said Endcliffe Park was 'well-used and well-loved' by his constituents and those from further afield. He urged people to vote to ensure it gets the 'recognition it deserves'.Anne La Sage, chair of the Friends of Porter Valley, said the group was 'so proud' of the nomination."Everyone in Sheffield knows what a wonderful asset (the park) is and we should spread the word!" she added.Fields in Trust, which runs the award, is a national charity that safeguards more than 2,600 parks and other open spaces across the UK.The Star recently reported how Sheffield City Council was considering using Endcliffe Park for temporary flood storage during storms.The proposal - one of six schemes on the table as part of a consultation which closed at the end of October - was criticised by a local mother, who said it would be 'devastating' for the area.The council said at the time that it was seeking people's views on a range of options as it was 'committed' to protecting the city from flooding.To vote, visit www.fieldsintrust.org/bestpark/yorkshire before Wednesday, November 9.
