Repeated vandalism has got so bad in Mount Pleasant Park in Sharrow that Sheffield Council are looking at installing taller posts to discourage further damage.

Plans will include the replacement of the six-metre posts across the park with eight-metre ones. Lamp covers are also being considered.

The lights have been fixed numerous times and residents have complained about damage in the past.

The plan would come from next year’s budget.

Sioned-Mair Richards, acting cabinet member for neighbourhoods, responded to a question on the issue at a council meeting.

She said: “Lighting in Mount Pleasant Park has been recognised as an issue for the last couple of years, which is contributing to anti-social behaviour.

“The lighting has been repaired several times over the years and keeps being damaged, therefore a longer term solution is required.

“Discussions are taking place between senior managers in the Parks service, Highways and Amey for possible solutions. Replacing the six metre posts with eight metre posts and lamp covers has been proposed as the best solution.”

Meanwhile, councillors in Nether Edge have invited the Creative Action Network, which runs the Sharrow and Darnall lantern festivals, to apply for ward funding.

The money would be used to run lantern-making workshops in Abbeydale, which councillors say will try to ‘engage young people’.
