Sheffield nurses awarded for inspiring the future generation

The nurses have received training and support though a scheme which is run by NHS Sheffield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and other CCGs across South Yorkshire.

Sarah Newton, Nurse Practitioner at Birley Health Centre, won the 2018 Yorkshire and the Humber Nurse Mentor of the Year award.

The award recognises Sarah’s work in developing the next generation of nurses, helping students to use what is taught in the classroom into reality.

Sarah said: ‘The awards ceremony was amazing and I felt so proud to be there. My highlight of being a nurse mentor has to be seeing students get jobs after their time with us.

Offering placements from two weeks to six months, the mentoring scheme links students with highly skilled nurses working across the city, giving them the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills that will help them become skilful healthcare professionals.

The nurse mentors themselves receive annual training, and also sit an exam which is set by educational leads based at the CCG.

Members of the NHS Sheffield CCG’s Continuing Health Care (CHC) Team have also received awards for excelling as nurse mentors. The mentoring scheme has been running since 2014, welcoming students from all different specialities and fields of nursing.

Team Leader Diane Holley received the award for inspirational mentoring as part of Sheffield Hallam University’s Annual Mentor Conference.

The CHC team also received an Inspirational Award and were praised for their work mentoring students as a whole.
