‘EXCEPTIONAL’ teaching has been praised at Sheffield’s oldest nursery which received top marks in an inspection.

The latest Ofsted report for Broomhall Nursery School - which has 137 children aged from three to five registered - found it was ‘outstanding’ in achievement, teaching, behaviour and leadership.

Key findings in the June inspection were that ‘sky high aspirations’ for each child were shared by the headteacher Gill Peacock, staff and the governing body.

The report said: “Children benefit from exceptional teaching.

“Stimulating activites indoors and outside take full account of children’s stages of development and interests and inspire them to develop independence and creativity.

“Children’s achievement is outstanding in all areas of school.

“This is because the headteacher and her staff apply their considerable expertise wholeheartedly to providing each child with just the right support and stimulation to enable them to flourish.

“In the words of a parent, ‘they meet children where they are and challenge them to fulfil their potential’.”

Specialised lessons for children with communication difficulties were singled out for praise.

The lessons are proving so successful that the school, which is part of the children’s centre on Broomhall Road and opened in 1930, plans to use the same approach to enhance learning in other groups of children.

Other specialist support and a celebration of diversity at Broomhall were also mentioned.

The report said children progressed from below-expectation skills when joining the school, to mainly exceeding national levels when they depart.

Headteacher Gill Peacock said: “We are all thrilled.

“It is wonderful that the efforts and achievements of our children, parents, staff and governors have been acknowledged.

“I want to thank wholeheartedly everyone involved with Broomhall Nursery School for contributing to this brilliant outcome, which will help place us securely at the forefront of quality early years provision in this city.”
