Crews were working at the scene to clear the snow but Highways England stressed that conditions were still difficult.

Sheffield student Tasha Jagger said she had been stranded on the road for almost an hour with cars 'piling up and getting stuck'.

She said that the road was still dangerous with ice underneath the snow.

"There must have been about ten cars packed up and one lorry when we were stuck. Everyone was just skidding," she said.

The road has now reopened in both directions after weather conditions improved, Highways England confirmed.
