The man, who did not wish to be named, was walking down Spa Lane in Woodhouse on Friday evening when the gang sneaked up on him from behind.

They attempted to cut his bag strap from behind with a Stanley knife but, when the man realised, he turned round and confronted the gang.

He was then told to hand over his bag and empty his pockets by the gang but was then attacked after refusing to do so.

The MMA fighter warded off the first attack; punching one of the gang but was then stabbed in the leg with a Stanley knife.

"I had taken my ear phones out and I just noticed my bag fall on the floor. The gang seemed just as surprised as I was when I turned around," he explained.

"There was a kid jumping at me so I grabbed his leg and put him on the floor. But then they stabbed me in the leg with the Stanley knife."

"There were about eight of them, all with their scarves up and you could only see their eyeballs.

"They wanted me to empty my pockets but I had just been boxing so I was ready if they wanted a fight."

The man, who says he has been training at the Muay Thai boxing gym on Ecclesall Road for the past two years, suffered a deep cut to this thigh.

He was taken to hospital by police where he received stitches but has been able to return to work.

"I've never had anything like this happen before," he explained.

"The police took me to hospital and they gave me a load of stitches because the stab wound is quite deep.

"I'm walking OK but it still hurts quite a bit. I'm quite a big guy and I do a lot of MMA but if this had happened to someone smaller it could have been a lot worse "
