Sheffield man's epic 93-mile walk for dementia charity

Robert Addenbrooke, aged 61, is aiming to walk from the Victoria Junction in Victoria Quays, Sheffield, all the way to Morecambe on the west coast via some of the north’s most scenic waterways.

He is hoping to raise thousands of pounds for the Defying Dementia charity appeal, a cause close to his heart after he has seen first hand how a former colleague and a relative have suffered from the disease.

The Chapeltown resident said: “Dementia affects so many people’s lives and I just want to do my bit to raise money to help progress research into this condition.”

The father-of-two, who spent nearly 20 years in the fire service in South Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Greater Manchester, aims to complete the walk in about four days and is looking at stopping overnight at fire stations on the route. Robert has already completed a few training walks around South Yorkshire in preparation for the challenge on September 13. He said: “I haven’t mapped out the whole route properly yet but I’m hoping to walk along some of the more scenic canals and rivers.”
