Sheffield man signs up for runs to say thanks to hospital for saving wife's life

A man whose wife was treated for cancer in Sheffield has signed up for two runs to raise cash for the hospital which saved her life.

Tom Bolland, aged 28, is to run the Great North Run and Sheffield 10k in September as a thank you to Weston Park Hospital.

He hopes to raise £750 to help fund more treatment and research at the specialist cancer hospital, where his ... wife, Becca, ...., was treated for cervical cancer.

The couple, from ....., were due to leave Sheffield to travel around Australia in October 2012 when Becca was diagnosed.

She has undergone radiotherapy, chemotherapy and a blood transfusion and is now in remission.

Fundraiser Tom, a financial advisor at Aviva, said: “I can’t forget the day we were told that Becca had cancer - it’s like being hit in the belly with a big rock and someone spinning you round and asking you to run straight.

“I’d never really been through anything like that before, so of course I thought the worst. The one thing I do remember was my mum saying, ‘but she’s at

Weston Park, don’t worry’.

“I had no idea what she was talking about but I took her word for it nevertheless and it wasn’t until Becca’s treatment started that I understood completely.

“I can’t name all the incredible staff individually but it’s thanks to them that I still get to argue with Becca about what’s for tea and about the price of new bedding.

“I’m super grateful Weston Park Hospital gave me the chance to do all that and even though there is still difficult times ahead, I worry a lot less knowing that this fantastic hospital is just up the road.”
