Sheffield man fined for failing to clear dog mess from garden

Mohammed Zaman's dog mess was so sustained that it caused a statutory nuisance, Sheffield Magistrates' Court heard this week.

 

Zaman, of Greenwood Road, High Green, Sheffield, was fined £500, and costs of £579 were awarded to the Council, plus a surcharge of £50 was imposed, leading to a total cost of £1,129. 

 

 

In October 2017 the issue became so severe that Sheffield Council issued an abatement notice, however, Mr Zaman ignored the notice and allowed the amount of dog faeces to build up. 

 

He was prosecuted for failing to comply with the notice, after a visit earlier this year revealed that the amount of dog poo had built up unacceptably.

 

 

Councillor Karen McGowan, Cabinet Assistant leading on the Clean Sheffield agenda, said: 'The Council tries very hard to help residents to keep their land tidy.  Situations like these can not only cause problems to neighbours but also encourages rats and other health risks. 

 

'We gave Mr Zaman many opportunities to comply but he didn't and that's why this ended up in court.

 

'We hope the substantial fine imposed sends a message out to all residents to keep their gardens tidy and reassures most responsible dog owners that we will take action against those who behave illegally.'
