Explaining the context of the attack, Judge Roger Thomas QC said: "He seemed to have something going through his mind about a girl. He said he misused amphetamines, and became paranoid and angry as a result."

Prosecuting, Susan Evans, told the court: "The victims were extremely upset about what happened, and felt they were worried to continue living in the sheltered accommodation at that time.

"Although, I understand the defendant no longer lives there."

Thompson, of Beighton Road, Woodhouse was convicted of two counts of assault against the person occasioning actual bodily harm at a hearing held at Sheffield Magistrates' Court earlier this year. The case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court for sentence on July 18.

Judge Roger Thomas QC sentenced Thompson to a 12 month community order, the requirements of which include a 25 day rehabilitation activity requirement and a nine month drug rehabilitation order.

He said: "For these assaults, if I was sentencing someone who was just a violent and nasty person, I would send them to prison. But actually I'm not sentencing you as that person.

"I'm sentencing you as someone who is rather vulnerable, who has issues that you need to sort out."

Judge Thomas added: "Things have moved on well for you. You have moved away from the sheltered accommodation where this happened at the beginning of the year. You have got some support and some help, and you're taking it."
