The proposal for a new leisure hall was revealed to the Star on Wednesday. The extension, funded entirely by Meadowhall’s co-owners British Land and Norges, will increase the number of restaurants and bars at the shopping centre while also adding extra activities and entertainment.

The development will create 1,000 jobs.

Deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats on Sheffield Council, Coun Penny Baker said: “This is great news for Sheffield. It will be a huge boost for our city region and will mean more money is spent locally, rather than in Leeds and Manchester.

“We just hope the Labour council will support this expansion, rather than waste tax payer money chasing investment and jobs away like they did with Next Home.”

The leisure hall plans will go on display at Meadowhall on June 3 and 4.
