FUNDRAISER John Burkhill got a big surprise when he was out collecting cash for charity on the streets of Sheffield.
The Macmillan supporter was met by reporter Charlie Garforth, from ITV’s Calendar News programme, who told him he had won a regional Pride of Britain Award.
John has been named a regional finalist for the Local Heroes Award – the UK’s biggest event for unsung heroes.
John, aged 73, was presented with his finalist’s award by the reporter.
He is one of 10 regional finalists who will make the trip to London to attend the nation’s biggest awards show for unsung heroes at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London’s Park Lane.
Margaret Emsley, of ITV Yorkshire, said: “Our viewers nominated some remarkable people but we felt that John’s story was particularly inspirational.
“Wwe wish him luck at the Pride of Britain Awards.
“His work around Sheffield has made him a real local hero and we’re proud he’s representing the Calendar region at the final.”
The national winner will be announced live on the night of the ceremony, which will be televised on Tuesday, October 30.
