Sheffield in the top 5 luckiest UK cities

In fact, Sheffield is one of the luckiest cities in the UK with almost 94% of people winning prizes in their lifetime, a quarter of which have notched up more than ten prizes.

Sheffield was found to be the fifth luckiest city in the UK; a much luckier result than those living in Belfast, which polled as the fifth unluckiest city.

Those in Sheffield are almost twice as likely as their fellow Yorkshire residents in Leeds to top the podium in the good fortune stakes, according to a study of winning habits from Meccabingo.com.

Whilst Sheffield is considered one of the luckiest cities in the UK, Manchester on the other hand is the unluckiest, with an eighth of people having never won a prize in their lifetime.

Celebrating a win is also key for residents of Sheffield, who are more likely to celebrate winning with a bigger celebration and feel happier for longer; one fifth remain excited for up to a week. In comparison, only 4% of Geordies maintain their excitement for this period of time, the majority of whom stay happy for just one or two days.

The prize value is also a key driver for people in Sheffield entering a competition. Whilst 65% do find prize value to be important, over a third (35%) aren’t in fact bothered about the prize value, the experience of winning is of more value to them. In comparison to residents in Manchester, where 75% are more driven to enter a competition based on the value of the prize.

Celebration styles across the UK also vary, with people in Sheffield the most likely to tell their family the news straight away (47%). Across the country in Brighton, it takes longer to sink in they’ve won but when they’re certain they’ve won they celebrate with their friends and family and on social media (53%).

Psychologist Donna Dawson, says:

“The feeling of luck usually comes down to individual attitude. When someone who considers themselves ‘lucky’ loses, they often blame external circumstances and are more optimistic about their next chance.

“People who believe they’re ‘unlucky’ tend to blame themselves, take their failure to heart and believe fate is against them. Feeling such negative emotions can prevent them from entering future competitions and thus affecting how often and how big they win.
