Sheffield ice hockey star’s sickness ‘ordeal’ on dream holiday

A Sheffield ice hockey star and his partner are seeking legal action after their dream holiday was ruined by illness.

Sheffield Steeldogs captain Greg Wood, aged 26, and girlfriend Natalie Bown were struck by symptoms of severe sickness and diarrhoea just days into their two-week break at the Melia Las Dunas hotel in Cayo Santa Maria, Cuba, last June.

The couple – who live in Beighton – had saved hard to make their dream of snorkelling in the Caribbean Sea come true.

They have now instructed Sheffield lawyers Irwin Mitchell to help in their ‘quest for answers’.

Greg said the couple’s hotel room was dirty, food was served cold and cockroaches were seen in eating areas.

He said: “The whole holiday turned into an ordeal.

“We want to know whether more could have been done to prevent our illnesses.”

Travel agent Thomas Cook said the firm had been contacted by a solicitor acting on behalf of the couple and it was liaising with them to fully investigate their claim.

A spokesman said: “Any reports of illness from our holidaymakers are taken extremely seriously.

“So we are naturally very concerned to hear Mr Wood and Ms Bown became unwell when they travelled to Cuba with us.”
