Sheffield ice hockey fan lucky to escape after incident at Belfast

A Sheffield Steelers fan was lucky to escape with her life after falling into a Belfast canal on Sunday night.

The woman was pulled from the water, unconscious, after ice hockey match between the Steelers and the Belfast Giants.

The woman and her rescuer, who The Star understands is a Belfast Harbour Police constable, required treatment after the incident in the cold waters of the Abercorn Basin.

The woman's mother was also treated at the scene.

The woman, who is in her 20s, had gone to Northern Ireland to watch the Giants and Steelers match, accompanied by her parents, brother and boyfriend.
