Sanctuary’s Roman Ridge Extra Care scheme celebrated Armed Forces Day from morning through to night, starting the day with a talk from national charity Help For Heroes.

Help For Heroes has been the chosen charity among Roman Ridge residents, who spent the year hosting tea parties, raffles, merchandise sales and other activities, raising £1,300 for the organisation.

Further donations were raised for the charity on the day through the sales of homemade cakes baked by the residents.

The day rounded off with a lively hour of singing and dancing, courtesy of singer and performer Claire Hudspeth, of Razzle Dazzle, who kept the audience entertained with a number of vintage wartime hits.

Activities co-ordinator Janet Axelby said: “We have several residents who are old enough to remember the Second World War, so Armed Forces Day holds a lot of deep, personal significance for them.

“We’re extremely grateful to everyone involved in making the day such a success – events like these really unite our community at Roman Ridge and make us remember the sacrifices made for future generations.”

Armed Forces Day is a chance to show support for the men and women who make up the armed forces community, whether currently serving, veterans, cadets or the families of servicemen and women.
