Sheffield hostel set for new ownership

A HOSTEL for homeless young people in Sheffield is changing hands - to secure investment worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

St Barnabas Young Persons’ Hostel, Highfield, currently houses up to 16 residents.

Ownership of the hostel - four terrace houses - is currently split, with Sheffield Council owning one, South Yorkshire Housing Association two and operator Roundabout, a charitable trust, owning the fourth.

Next Wednesday, Sheffield Council’s cabinet is set to approve leasing its leasing the building to South Yorkshire Housing Association for 125 years rent-free, in exchange for the housing association upgrading the ‘outdated’ building’s facilities.

The proposals involve SYHA ‘remodelling’ the building, with an extension into the loft space to create three extra bedrooms and ensure all are en suite.

Two bedrooms would have wheelchair access.
