Sheffield hospital team set for charity skydive

Kirsty Young, aged 35, is set to join seven of her colleagues at the haematology department at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in a skydive on June 19 to raise funds for Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

The team are due to plummet 15,000 ft above Hibaldstow Airfield in Lincolnshire to raise funds to improve patient comfort in the ward.

Prior to the jump, Kirsty said: “I don’t know why I’m so scared of flying, I’ve flown every year since birth and was never scared until I went without my parents.

“Then it just got worse and worse.

“I’m also petrified of heights, I can’t even look down the middle of the stairs at the Hallamshire Hospital.

“So, as you can imagine, the thought of going up in a plane and then jumping out of it is a nightmare for me.

“Our patients go through such a lot and it’s a really scary time for them. We do all we can while we are at work, but not many of us actually know how it feels to be told you have a form of cancer or to be told that they are facing an uncertain future.

“That’s why I’m facing my biggest fears and doing this.”

The group is hoping to raise £3000 which will go towards buying chairs and smart TVs to allow patients to skype or facetime loved ones.
