Volunteers from Sheffield Wednesday National Citizenship Service hoped to break the previous record of completing 667 servings across multiple sites when they took part in the challenge last week.

The Laurels and The Limes Care Home on Manchester Road, in Broomhill, was part of the event, held during nutrition and hydration week.

Simon Shires, manager of The Laurels and The Limes, said: “When we heard about the record attempt, we had to sign the home up.

“Our residents love their cream tea so we thought it was a great opportunity.

“Plus we used the occasion to highlight the importance of nutritious food and ample fluids in health and social care settings as part of nutrition and hydration week.”

Afternoon tea was served in health and social care settings around the globe as part of the attempt.

As well as those taking part in Australia and America, staff at Sheffield’s Thornbury Hospital also tucked in for the cause.

BMI Healthcare and Compass Group was aiming for over 1, 000 participants nationwide and raised money for The Alzheimer’s Society.

Employees in Sheffield also hosted a cake sale on the day.

Tracy Jackson, director of operations at Thornbury Hospital, said: “We thought it was a fantastic opportunity to get everyone from the community together to support the project, not only to achieve the new Guinness Book of World Record’s title but also to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.”

The previous record was broken in Leeds by the YBS Group last June.
