Sheffield hit by storm as boy, 9, dies in lightning strike while playing football in Blackpool

Photographs and videos of the storm were shared across social media while in Blackpool the town was rocked by the death of a nine-year-old boy who was hit by lightning while playing football.

Detective Superintendent Nick Connaughton of Lancashire Police said: “This is a truly devastating incident and our thoughts are wholeheartedly with the family and friends of the young boy, who has passed away, at this very sad and distressing time.”

Firefighters in Doncaster dealt with a lightning strike at a house on Turnberry Court, Bentley, last night.

The aerial on the property was hit during the storm.

They also dealt with a fire at a new restaurant due to open soon in Sheffield in the middle of the storm although the cause of the blaze is not yet known.

Crews were called to Tim Hortons at Crystal Peaks Retail Park at 10pm and found a fire inside.

They left at around 11.15pm and an investigation into the cause of the fire is now under way.

The restaurant and drive-thru – part of a Canadian chain – is set to open early this summer.

There were reports of a lightning strike at a house on the Parson Cross estate during last night’s storm.

Yesterday’s storm also caused flash flooding in parts of Sheffield, including Chesterfield Road, Heeley, but the city is expected to remain largely dry today, according to the Met Office.
