Sheffield Half Marathon still racing ahead with further success

Entries are already being accepted for next year's half marathon in Sheffield following its second run into the hills in the south-west of the city.

There were almost 6,000 finishers in the 2016 Plusnet Yorkshire Half Marathon - Sheffield, out of more than 7,000 who signed up, and organisers Run for All are expecting charity donations to total hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Sunday’s top prizes went to John Franklin, who crossed the finish line in a time of 70:24. The first woman home was Zanthe Wray, in 83:12.

Among the good causes set to receive a boost include youth housing charity Roundabout, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Macmillan Cancer Care, the Children’s Hospital Charity, Breast Cancer Care and St Luke’s. Sponsorship from the mini and junior runs goes to Asperger’s Children and Carers Together.

The event’s success will give further impetus to the council’s plan to set up a new city centre 10k, the successor to the Great Yorkshire Run in Sheffield. The closing date for bids from organisers is tomorrow (Friday).
