Sheffield group sets the ball rolling on park aim

The Bingham Park Community Group has been established primarily to campaign for more funding to restore the tennis courts at the site, close to Greystones and Hunters Bar.

The society is expecting the council to spend around £70,000 on overhauling some of the courts, but says more money is needed to completely restore all of the sports facilities.

Kate Robinson, the group’s secretary, who lives in Greystones, said: “What we would like to do is maybe restore three of the courts and restore the football pitch that could do with resurfacing.

“Hopefully we could do other things - maybe install a climbing wall or a skateboard park for the older kids.

“We’re looking at what people from the area would like to see and would like to use there.”

Kate said funding applications and support from larger businesses would be needed to collect the necessary funds.

“We can’t tell at this stage how much we’ll need.

“But it’s going to be a substantial amount.

“We’re not going to raise the money from bake sales and raffles.”

She said improvements in Endcliffe Park could be used as a template.

“The play park there was funded by the Friends of Endcliffe Park, also the outdoor gym and parkour area were both put together by groups.

“The local community working with the council has made Endcliffe Park the facility that it is.

“We’re hoping we can do the same for Bingham Park.”

The meeting, in the Bingham Park bowling pavilion, will start at 2pm.
