Sheffield great-grandma turns 104

A Sheffield great-grandmother has celebrated her 104th birthday.

Mary Sturman, of St George’s Court, Netherthorpe, enjoyed a family meal for her special day on Monday.

Mary was born and raised in Hillsborough.

She married her first husband, Sam Simpson, whose parents had run the La Plata Club in Hillsborough. They had three children - David, Winifred and Margaret.

Sadly, Sam died in 1955 and Mary was left to raise three young children on her own. She took various part-time cleaning jobs, including one at St Vincent’s Church on Solly Street, to pay the bills.

She later married her second husband, Harry, who died a number of years ago.

Mary’s grand-daughter, Susan Dyer, said Mary is still living happily on her own in sheltered accommodation near to her daughter, Winifred, who is her main carer.

Susan said: “She loves doing sequin art and she goes into the communal hall every week for crafts, bingo, exercise classes and bowls.

“She is a right character, she’s just brilliant and she has a really good sense of humour.”

Mary has eight grandchildren and countless great-grandchildren.
