A well-known Sheffield man has died in Spain on Christmas Day.

Former Pit Deputy Kenneth Ward died in hospital in Torrevieja after a short illness. He was aged 81.

The son of William and Grace Ward, Ken grew up in Hillsborough with his sisters Betty and Brenda.

He married Crookes girl Norma Cuckson and they had five children, the late Paul and Vikki, as well as Jacquie, Nicholas and Russell.

For much of their married life the family lived on Robin Lane, Beighton, and Ken worked at collieries in the area including Brookhouse, Westhorpe and Creswell until it closed in 1991.

The life-long Wednesdayite then worked in security at John Carr’s Joinery on Woodhouse Mill until retirement.

Ken, who survived Norma, moved to Spain’s Costa Blanca, with his partner Maureen Hebdidge around 15 years ago.

His wish was that his body be used for medical research.
