Sheffield firm recognised for being a leader in manufacturing

Birley Manufacturing, which employs 94 staff and makes interior fittings and rail carriage equipment, was singled out for recognition at the national awards ceremony in London.

It was in the running for the Smart Product Award for its design, production and launch of a new rail carriage toilet unit called the Birley Universally Accessible Toilet module.

While the company didn’t win, it was highly commended by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders.

Tracey Roberts, financial controller at the firm, said: “Manufacturers are amongst the most prolific and successful innovators in the UK, so to be highly commended for this award is a great accomplishment and compliment to our team. We have been a specialist in our field for over two decades, focussed on carefully designing, developing and manufacturing innovative products to meet the needs of railway companies and passengers throughout the UK.
