Sheffield firefighters help raise thousands with charity single

South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue teamed up with Sheffield rockers the Everly Pregnant Brothers to record Chip Pan - a parody version of Kings of Leon's Sex On Fire.

The single - about a man who burns his house down after a spot of drunken cooking - earned them an appearance on Channel 4 show The Last Leg and made them outsiders for the coveted festive number one.

The single eventually finished eighth in the independent chart and 21st in the download chart.

But more importantly it raised £2,770 for charity, the band has now revealed, which has been split down the middle between Age UK Sheffield and homelessness charity Shelter.

Steve Chu, Age UK Sheffield's chief executive, said: "This is a tremendous gesture by the band, we really can't thank them enough. Our work supports people aged 50 or over who need our help in Sheffield, many of whom live in poverty, poor health, poor housing, or in isolation. This will help us to provide older Sheffielders with a brighter and independent future."

The fire brigade said that as well as being a bit of fun, the single, recorded at Sheffield Central fire station, had helped raise awareness of the dangers of chip pans and late-night cooking.
