The Grade II listed Lion Works at Spital Hill has undergone a £240,000 restoration of the roof and supporting structures as part of Sheffield Council’s ‘Stuck Sites’ programme.

The scheme makes funds available to tackle neglected sites and heritage buildings at risk, where there is the chance to kick start housing or residential development.

The council said the work was carried out to preserve the building’s heritage status and prominent position on the Sheffield skyline.

Politicians and community groups were all keen to see the building restored.

Coun Alan Law, planning and highways committee chairman, said: “We felt it was really important to take the initiative to bring this important, historic building back into use.

“It had become an eyesore, but now has the potential to provide much-needed housing on the fringe of the city centre as well as enhancing regeneration work already completed in the Spital Hill area.”

The revamp means plans for up to 45 dwellings in the building could go-ahead.

Work on the building began in April last year and took five months to complete.

The owners have previously submitted a pre-application and the council planning department are working with them towards a full application.
