South Yorkshire Eating Disorder Association based at Neepsend is urging more people to get involved as the case load increases.

People with eating disorders can only access NHS statutory treatment once their illness has become severe and at times life-threatening.

SYEDA offers to help during the earlier and more moderate stages of the illness. Research has shown that the earlier someone receives treatment, the quicker and more likely the recovery is.

Government cash and charitable grants from organisations like Comic Relief has meant the charity has expanded outside of Sheffield into Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley.

Much of their work and resources goes into helping young people under the age of 25, but the charity has been a rise in the number of older adults.

The charity has over 40 referrals a month and provides training and education support programmes to health professionals and schools.

Jenny Allen, current chair of SYEDA said: "This year we have seen a big increase in our work. We have been able to extend our education and awareness programmes and clinical help into Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster due to statutory funding geared directly by the Government towards young people.

"Consequently, our organisation has grown considerably. In order to continue to provide good governance we are looking to extend our Board of Trustees, widening its skill and geographical base.

"Furthermore we are also looking for a new chairperson, a post I have held for the past six and a half years. I feel we should now bring in new thoughts and ideas to SYEDA.

"Therefore, I am asking people of Sheffield and South Yorkshire if they would like to support people affected by Eating Disorders by considering membership of the Board of Trustees.

"We are looking for someone with empathy, leadership and energy to take the organisation on for the next three years as Chair. We are also looking specifically for skills in fundraising and legal knowledge, other skills too are welcome."
