Sheffield Eagles still seek the right recipe

It is back to the drawing board again for Sheffield Eagles after another setback in their topsy-turvy Kingstone Press Championship season.

The Eagles fell to back-to-back Summer Bash defeats at the hands of London Broncos after a disappointing second half which saw Mark Aston’s side slip to their third consecutive league defeat.

The Eagles showed some positive signs in the opening quarter of the televised contest at Bloomfield Road, despite arriving late due to a vehicle fire on the M6.

The kick-off was delayed by 50 minutes to allow for the arrival of Aston’s side, but the Eagles chief refused to blame the far from ideal preparation for their demise.

“We are looking for performances,” Aston admitted.

“We did start brightly but we ran out of energy at the end of the day, and also ideas. I thought it was a poor game, I didn’t think that we delivered what we were asked to deliver. We are a little bit disappointed but that is where we are at.”

The performance from the Eagles has followed a similar pattern to what has been a head scratching season.

Last week Aston was pleased with the application and fight shown against a strong Bradford Bulls side, despite a narrow defeat.

After a heavy defeat against the Broncos earlier in the season it was always going to be a tall order to topple one of the division’s form sides.

Aston’s side showed their capabilities in spells during the first half, but again a lack of consistency in their game saw them fall away after the interval.

“There has been a lot of changes, we have brought in 11 new faces and it takes a bit of time to bond and we haven’t quite hit it yet. There has been some other issues too but what I am looking for people who want to play for Sheffield Eagles, and that is what we need to get back to.”
