With several senior players missing for last Friday’s Sheffield Eagles defeat at Dewsbury Rams, director of rugby Mark Aston will be hoping for a swift return for some of his most experienced performers.

Aston was without new signings Jamie Langley and John Davies, while prop Mitchell Stringer was also absent with an ankle injury as the Eagles fell to a 19-10 defeat at the Tetley’s Stadium in their Kingstone Press Championship curtain-raiser.

Former Great Britain international Langley looks set to be sidelined for a fortnight, but in his role as player/coach Aston believes he is still bringing much to the party.

“Jamie isn’t quite there, which was a shame,” he said.

“He is maybe a couple of weeks away.

“When I met Jamie he spoke about what his aspirations were for the future, which included coaching and we were delighted to give him that opportunity.

“He has been outstanding in pre-season but we still want him out on the field because he can still give us something out there too.”

Eagles play their first home game against London Broncos this Sunday at the Keepmoat Stadium, kick-off 4.15pm.
