Sheffield Eagles land Huddersfield Giants youngster Liam Johnson on loan

Sheffield Eagles have continued their recruitment drive by signing Liam Johnson on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The versatile Huddersfield Giants ace joins Mark Aston’s side and becomes the 10th new arrival of 2017.

The second-rower, who can also operate at centre and loose forward, could make his debut against Halifax this Sunday, as Aston continues to reinforce a squad which again looks set to be boosted by the dual-registration agreement with Leigh Centurions.

“He is a good young kid that wants to develop and we will help with that,” said Aston.

“He is a great signing for us, and we are still looking for a couple more.

“Competition for places is the key for me, it always has been, and always will be, this is another addition that will help provide that.”

The 19-year-old had a stint with Oldham last season where he scored four tries in 19 appearances.

Aston confirmed that he sought the services of the former England youth captain much earlier, but has had to bide his time before finally getting his man.

“This deal has been done for some time now but it didn’t come to fruition for whatever reason,” Aston revealed.

“He ended up playing with his parent club but we are delighted to have sorted it out, and he will add competition. He can play in the back row, he can play at centre. He certainly has the ability otherwise he wouldn’t be in that system.

“He needs to mature, he needs to develop, just like all junior players. The next challenge for him is to be playing in the Championship, week in, week out.”

Aston is preparing his side for Sunday’s showdown with Halifax, following their sensational victory Toulouse last weekend. Kick off at The Shay is 3pm.
