Sheffield Eagles land first victory

After seven consecutive defeats coming into the Good Friday clash, the Eagles threw the form book out of the window for a deserved victory – their first at their new home back in the Steel City.

Try machine Garry Lo rediscovered his scoring touch with a brace as Aston’s side began the Easter double-header with a much-needed morale-boosting victory.

With Aston admitting confidence was low coming into the contest, the Eagles gave themselves a welcome boost by bagging a try in the first minute when Shaun Pick barged over from close range, and Oscar Thomas kicked the extras.

Danny Yates’ converted try brought the scores level, but the Eagles hit the front again on 20 minutes when Josh Toole found Ryan Millar who crossed, and Thomas converted.

The gap was closed again through Rob Massam’s unconverted score, but approaching the half-hour mark Ben Moores crossed and Lewis Palfrey converted to put the visitors four points up.

In weeks gone by that could have floored Aston’s side, but they came roaring back when Lo accepted a Simon Brown kick to touch down, and four minutes later Daniel Igbinedion scored close to the posts, with Thomas converting.

There was still time for another try before the hooter as the Eagles moved further clear when Brown’s grubber was grounded by Thomas, who then converted his own score.

Aston’s side showed the character and fight called for by their coach during the week.

Late on a Dean Cross try reduced the gap setting up a grandstand finish, but Aston’s side closed out proceedings when Brown set the platform with a sensational 40/20, and Matty Fozard showed quick thinking at the restart to cross the whitewash. Brown converted.

Lo put the icing on the cake with his second try after great work by Greg Burns, as the Eagles finally tasted victory, with Batley Bulldogs next in town on Bank Holiday Monday.
