The unbeaten super-bantamweight (real name Barry Awad) was tested positive for stanozolol, an anabolic steroid, in 2014.

A two year ban has been reduced after an appeal to the UK doping agency UKAD.

However the British Boxing Board of Control continue to hold his license and today declined to comment on whether Awad was able to get back into ring straight away. “We will be communicating with him today and informing him of our decision” said General Secretary Robert Smith.

Awad always insisted the was the victim of a spiteful act from a brother, who had spiked a nutritional drink.

The force of that logic, belatedly, appears to have been accepted by the UKAD.

Awad said:”I can’t wait to get back in the ring. I’m absolutely thrilled. I heard some comments recently by Carl Frampton saying all drug cheats should be banned for life, but I have never been a drug cheat. Thankfully, the people running the sport are UKAD and not Frampton. I have been through some tough times but I have been touched by the support of my coaching staff, legal team, fans and fellow boxers.”

Awad added: “My coach Dominic Ingle has stood by me through thick and thin and I will be forever grateful.

“Now the hard work begins and I can already hear the words I have always dreamed of, ‘And the new world champion, from Sheffield, Kid Galahad.’

“That is how I am going to repay all those people who have stood by me.”
