Kia the dog was discovered in the tank by owner Hazel Higgins, of Manchester Road, Deepcar, after she heard her other dog making noises of distress.

Hazel, a former dog agility trainer, found Kia frantically trying to get a foothold inside the eight foot deep tank, with her head dipping below the surface.

Hazel’s partner David Bew, also of Manchester Road, came to the rescue, lying flat on the ground while pulling Kia, who was covered in sewage, out of the tank.

She was rushed to Abbey Vets surgery in Barnsley, in a state of shock, with marked hypothermia and also septicaemia, having inhaled significant amounts of excrement.

“It was definitely touch and go but thankfully following 24 hours of intensive care and nursing she was breathing more easily,” vet Tony Duffy said.

Kia is now back at home following two days at Abbey Vets.

“After several showers and lots of shampoo Kia is back to her normal self,” Hazel said.
