A Chapeltown dance school is holding a summer show at the Rotherham Civic Centre on the 24th, 25th and 26th of July and tickets are now available.
The show is entitled 'Let US entertain you' with emphasis on the unison of 'US', with the main aim being to showcase the talent of the children and to entertain the audience.
The dance school offers a diverse range of styles including the traditional: ballet, tap, modern and jazz. Whilst also placing emphasis on singing, contemporary and pointe.
The opening number in the show is to the well know song 'Dancing Fool' from Copacabana. Other numbers also include: 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang', 'Getting to know you' and 'When you wish upon a Star' along with some solo performances.
But that's all I can tell you as I don't want to give too much away.
The Pickering Academy of Dance is based in Chapeltown at the Newton Hall - the second largest dance hall in Sheffield (after the City Hall), equipped with a spring floor, which helps to aid elevation and prevent injury.
Classes are held on a Thursday, starting at 3:45pm and Saturday, between 9:15am and 2:30pm.
The children are organised into a colour-graded system based on age. So, no matter what their capability, children are placed among peers of their own age.
Melanie Pickering, Owner of The Pickering Academy of Dance, first opened her doors to budding young dancers in the midst of the Miners Strike in 1985 and 32 years later the school is still going strong.
After being a member of the dance school and attending last night to speak to some of the teachers it is apparent just how much of a close-knit community it is.
In fact I would describe it as more of a family.
However, the school has seen some devastating loses to their family.
Alison Gail Pickering, a beloved dance teacher and sister of Melanie Pickering, tragically lost her battle with cancer in 2015.
Alison's bubbly spirit still lives on within the school; in the smiling eyes of the children who love to dance and in the choreography and technique taught to the students.
The teachers currently working at the Pickering Academy of Dance all began their training with the Pickering sisters.
Including Rachel Green, 37, who was one of Melanie Pickering's first students.
The school has seen major success within the dancing industry, with students progressing to: The Royal Ballet School, Laine Theatre Arts and Elmhurst Ballet School. Former students have then gone on to perform within various ballet companies, cruise ships and in the West End.
Tickets for the show are priced at £10 and are available via the Rotherham Civic Centre website https://www.rotherhamtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/ or by calling the box office on 01709 823621.
