A thrill-seeking Sheffield dad is to embark on a three-month sailing expedition from Australia to China – despite having almost no experience.

Peter Murray, aged 54, will embark on the near 8,000 kilometre journey from Airlie Beach, north of Brisbane, on January 18.

All being well, he will dock in Quingdao, China, on March 10.

Peter, of Sothall, said: “I’m excited and nervous about the challenge. There are obvious risks involved but I can’t wait.”

The dad-of-two is taking part in the Clipper Round The World yacht race.

Dubbed as ‘one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other’, the race invites professionals and those with no experience to join.

Peter will be taking part in one leg of the 11-month race.

He will be aboard a 70-foot Clipper Racing Yacht with 21 other people, ranging from amateurs to professionals.

On his decision to take part, Peter said he had been in London and stumbled across the boat he will soon be boarding.

After a chat with the crew, he decided to go for it.

Peter, a marketing manager for online gambling companies, said: “I had been looking for an adventure for a long time.

“I thought ‘I’m not going to climb Everest and I don’t fancy lying on a beach’ and this seemed like the best thing.”

After passing a fitness test and learning some sailing basics, his application to race was accepted.

Peter said: “There has already been one fatality this year, which highlights just how dangerous it is.”

He added: “I had visions of drinking wine in the Mediterranean but I know it’s definitely not going to be like that.”

Peter said fresh food will run out in a matter of weeks – after then it will be dry food only.

There will be no alcohol on board either – as well as no phone reception or Internet.

Peter said: “I’m not sure how I’ll find it, but I’ve wanted to try it for a long time.”
