Sheffield cyclist left for dead after hit-and-run

A Sheffield hit-and-run victim today branded a motorist a '˜coward' '“ after he left him lying in the road with broken bones.

Kyle Johnson, aged 21, broke his leg and shoulder when a car ploughed into him – flinging him on to the windscreen and over the roof of the car.

Engineer Kyle, who watched the car speed off afterwards, told The Star he had this message for the the driver: “You coward. I could have been dead.”

He was cycling through Oughtibridge on his way to work in Catcliffe when the car smashed into him,

Kyle, of Wharncliffe, said the car pulled out of the Bridge Hill junction, next to the Cock Inn pub, straight into his bike.

He said: “My front wheel hit the front of the car and I got thrown onto the bonnet, into the windscreen, up over the roof and landed in a heap on the road.

“I saw the car stop for about five seconds – then just speed off.”

Passing motorists stopped to help Kyle off the road and called an ambulance.

He was rushed to Northern General Hospital where he had surgery to fit a titanium rod into his broken femur.

Kyle, who also broke his shoulder, was told by doctors he was lucky not to have been seriously injured – or killed – in the crash.

Addressing the driver, Kyle said: “What was going through your mind?

“How could you think it’s acceptable to leave somebody lying in the road after crashing into them?”

Kyle has been recovering in hospital since the hit-and-run, but is hoping to be discharged by the end of this week.

His father, Colin, who is also a fond cyclist, said: “I would say to the driver: search your conscience and hand yourself in. You know it’s the right thing to do.”

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Police said: “At around 8.20am on January 7, it was reported that a car and a bike were involved in a collision in Forge Lane, Oughtibridge.

“The car involved in the collision reportedly failed to stop at the scene and is believed to have driven towards Jaw Bone Hill following the collision.

“Officers believe the car involved was a blue colour and that it may have a dent on the passenger side of the car.”
