Police had to be called to a local cricket game in Sheffield after reports that a fight broke out on the pitch in the middle of the match.

The Yorkshire & Derbyshire League match between Stocksbridge Cricket Club and Totley Cricket Club on Saturday, July 23 was apparently abandoned due to the scrap.

South Yorkshire Police were called at about 3.15pm to reports of a fight at Bracken Moor cricket field in Stocksbridge.

A 23-year-old man suffered a minor injury to his back.

The force said it is ‘working alongside the cricket club’ to investigate.

Both clubs are being made subject to an official disciplinary hearing by the Yorkshire and Derbyshire League this week.

Alan Thwaites, chairman of Stocksbridge Cricket Club, said: “It’s disappointing when this happens anywhere at any time, not just our club.”

He added that there had never been such an incident at the club before, but that he could not comment further before the hearing.

A spokesman for Totley Cricket Club refused to comment.
