Sheffield Council seeks help with tree planting

Members of the public are invited to help plant 1,000 native broad leaf trees in Burbage Valley on Monday, March 21 and Tuesday, March 22.

Restoration of the site forms part of ongoing environmental improvements to the area, which saw a large section of an unmanaged conifer plantation removed last March.

The conifers, which were planted in the 1970s, had reached maturity and posed a danger, with trees falling over and at high risk of going up in flames in fires.

The former plantation is now being developed into a native woodland – reflecting the woodland found in the surrounding areas including oak, rowan, birch and willow.

Coun. Sioned-Mair Richards, cabinet member for neighbourhoods at Sheffield Council, said: “I understand how important our countryside is to people in Sheffield and I share that love and desire to protect, maintain and in the case of Burbage improve what we have.
