OPPOSITION members of Sheffield Council have criticised the ruling Labour group for recruiting a second support officer to help their councillors.

Labour currently has one worker in the role after a second went on maternity leave – and it is recruiting for temporary cover to replace her on up to £27,000 per annum.

But Lib Dems, who have reduced their support officers from two to one, are unhappy.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, group leader, said: “Everyone else in the Town Hall has seen their office and support reduced.

“For months, Labour have said there is no alternative to cutting dementia centres and recycling services. Clearly there are funds available, it’s just Labour would rather spend it on themselves.”

Coun Bryan Lodge, cabinet member for finance, said: “Last year we reduced spending on councillor allowances and are saving money through cutting spending on managers by £1 million in the next year.”
