Sheffield Council considers permit parking on streets near Crystal Peaks shopping centre
A permit scheme could be introduced to ease parking problems around a Sheffield shopping centre.
Sheffield Council is considering a request for residents' permits in Drake House Lane West and Lilac Road, near Crystal Peaks.
It follows a complaint from residents of Drake House Lane West that parking had increased on their road and was having a 'significant negative impact' on their ability to park close to their own properties.
Residents asked for a residents' only parking scheme in the two roads - and were supported by their ward councillors and their MP Clive Betts.
The council's cabinet member for business, skills and development Mazher Iqbal will make a decision on the scheme on Thursday, with officers recommending approval.
A report to Coun Iqbal says the scheme was drawn up after 'investigation by officers, and discussions with residents and the local councillor'.
It adds: "Parking for the nearby Crystal Peaks shopping centre appears to take place on Drake House Lane West and Lilac Road.
"This parking makes it difficult for residents to park near to their own properties.
"Parking also takes place on both sides of Drake House Lane West which in parts is narrow. Parking on both sides of the road could restrict access for emergency service vehicles.
"Implementation of a resident’s only permit parking scheme will restrict parking to residents and visitors only.
"A small area of limited waiting parking bays will allow some additional non-residents parking during the weekday and additional waiting restrictions will reduce the likelihood of vehicles being parked on both sides of Drake House Lane West thereby maintaining emergency service vehicle access."
The scheme changed several times after public feedback.
Parking bays in front of numbers 72 to 84 Drake House Lane West were removed, after fears they could restrict access to driveways were raised.
And minor changes were made after South Yorkshire Fire Service raised concerns that parking on both sides of Drake House Lane West could hinder their appliances.
Of six responses to a consultation on the final scheme, five were in favour, and the one objection was to the need to buy an annual permit, rather than to the scheme itself.
