Sheffield commuters facing days of travel chaos after major train station cancels all services

Disruption to journeys began on Tuesday night after a wall collapsed between Liverpool Lime Street and Edge Hill.

Trains are currently unable to to run to or from Liverpool Lime Street and Network Rail have warned that the line may not re-open until Monday, March 6.

All trains from Sheffield to Liverpool Lime Street have been cancelled. East Midlands Trains will start and terminate at Manchester Oxford Road.

The train will no longer call at Warington Central, Widnes, Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street.

Commuters travelling from Liverpool Lime Street to Sheffield have been advised to walk to Liverpool Central and change at Liverpool South Parkway.

The collapse of the trackside wall has sent rubble across all four railway lines at Liverpool Lime Street, damaging the overhead wires in the process.

Network Rail say an extensive clear-up needs to take place to make the location safe before repairs to the overhead wires can be undertaken.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "An extensive clear-up needs to take place to make the location safe before repairs to the overhead wires can be undertaken.

"Early indications suggest train services will not resume for several days while extensive clear-up and repairs take place to make the location safe."
