The Shiregreen Neighbourhood Centre was officially re-opened last Saturday by Brightside and Hillsborough MP Harry Harpham.

Mr Harpham said: “This is a fantastic resource for the community and it has been for many years. It’s a place where people can get together, communicate with each other and talk about plans they have for the area. It is brilliant.

“Because of the cuts the council is facing, it is mostly run by volunteers. Without them, we wouldn’t have places like this. They volunteer to make the place where they live, where they grew up and went to school, a better place. They do it just for the love of being part of the neighbourhood – we have some amazing people in our community.”

The centre, which was established in 1985, offers all sorts of activities, from English and Maths lessons to zumba classes.

Julie-ann Fabian, who has been volunteering as the chair of the centre for two and a half years, said: “We are here for the community - we want the best for the area and we try to keep everything as low cost as we can. There aren’t that many places for people to go in this area.”

One of the groups who will be using the community centre is Shiregreen Social Group, who will be teaching people how to knit, crochet and hand massage every Wednesday.

Volunteer Margaret Gardiner said: “People can get a little bit isolated and we want to do our bit.”

Best Start Communities Count, which has been awarded £500,000 by the Lottery Fund, will also be working in the centre.
