A late night cream cheese thief was caught by a customer as he fled the supermarket he had stolen from.

The shoplifter had taken a tub of Philadelphia cream cheese from the Co-operative store on Gleadless Road in Heeley, Sheffield.

But a customer and a member of staff stopped the man as he tried to leave, and detained him until police arrived.

A spokesman for the Co-operative said: “The man was detained by a customer as he attempted to leave the store. A member of staff helped to detain the man until police attended, and CCTV has been given to the police.”

Police said a 27-year-old man had been charged with theft after the incident at 10.30pm on Monday.
