BOXING enthusiasts are preparing to lace up their gloves for a sixth annual charity fight night – which is set to bring their fundraising above the £30,000 mark.
So far, the events, organised by John McCormack, of Hunters Bar, with the assistance of Sheffield Boxing Centre, have brought in £27,800.
The latest show takes place on Friday, November 2, at the Platinum Suite, Bramall Lane, from 7pm.
The event is in aid of Ella’s Fund and Ben O’Brien’s Fund – charities set up by the families of poorly youngsters battling a brain tumour and cancer, and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
John, a management consultant who has taken part in numerous ‘white collar’ fights over the years and is on the bill himself, said: “This year, we are hoping to clear the £30,000 mark for money raised, which will be a great achievement.”
There will be nine bouts in total, including a heavyweight contest for a trophy.
Tickets are £15 and John is hoping to sell at least 400 to raise £6,000.
Glyn Rhodes, who runs Sheffield Boxing Centre, said: “I think what John does is admirable – I take my hat off to the guy.
“What he has raised so far from organising the previous shows over the years is a great result and I know that any show takes months and months of hard work and preparation.
“I do it all the time but it’s my job, whereas John works, trains and runs marathons in his spare time so it’s been quite some effort for him.
“I hope this year’s show is a huge success and that he reaches the target for fundraising.”
“Those taking part have also worked really hard too, to prepare for their bouts.”
All proceeds from the show will be donated to the charities, after costs have been covered.
