Sheffield cellists aim to perform on every UK pier in two weeks

Three Sheffield musicians will attempt to perform in some of Britain's best-known seaside towns as part of a two-week charity challenge.

The Extreme Cellists, comprising Jeremy Dawson and Clare Wallace from Sheffield, and James Rees from Chester, will visit all 57 surviving piers in the UK in two weeks, giving a performance on each, in aid of the Alzheimers Society and CHICKS.

Jeremy Dawson, Clare Wallace and James Rees, all originally from Sheffield, are bidding to play their cellos on all 57 piers in the UK in just 14 days.

The group, known as The Extreme Cellists, are raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society and CHICKS, which provides free respite breaks for disadvantaged children.

Jeremy, aged 40, said: “We’ve previously undertaken challenges involving extreme physical activity, including running a marathon with our cellos, so it will be fascinating to experience a different type of endeavour.

“We aim to raise in excess of £5,000 for two very good causes this summer, and we hope we’ll introduce cello music to holidaymakers who might not be expecting it! ”

The whirlwind tour begins on July 22 at the Dunoon pier on the Cowal Peninsula in Argyll and Bute, Scotland.

The group will move clockwise, covering about 2,500 miles, and ending up in Blackpool on August 4.

They plan to give evening concerts in a few venues as they travel round.

Alzheimer’s Society community fundraising officer Jo Dobbie said: “As a charity, we rely on the generosity of groups like The Extreme Cellists to help us continue our vital work so that Alzheimer’s Society can continue leading the fight against dementia.

“Money raised will help us support people to live well with dementia today and funds research to find a cure for tomorrow.”

CHICKS regional fundraiser Sarah Roberts added: “CHICKS is all about making memories, so it’s brilliant this trio of cellists will be surprising holidaymakers and giving them something unusual to remember from their trip. The money raised will help us to give children in the UK a break away, where they can make some positive childhood memories.”
