A Sheffield beauty is taking time out from caring for her disabled mum to compete in a pageant next month.
Shauni Page is more used to organising cleaning rotas and looking after her mum than strutting across the stage.
But the 24-year-old part-time cleaning company supervisor has entered the Miss South Yorkshire contest in a bid to improve her confidence and follow her dreams.
There are two Miss South Yorkshire contests and the one Shauni has entered is affiliated with Miss England.
“I’ve been caring for my mum since I was in my teens,” said Shauni, of Manor in Sheffield.
“I don’t get out much and if I do it’s normally with mum.
“This is something for myself and something to look forward to which will hopefully give me a bit of a confidence boost.”
Shauni has always been interested in dancing but she dropped out of a national diploma course in dance when she was 17 so she could care for her 60-year-old mum, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth has a number of health problems including a personality disorder and non-epileptic seizures.
“Someone has to be with her all the time,” said Shauni.
“When she’s had a seizure she doesn’t know who she is or where she is. She has had this for quite a long time now and the only help I really get is when a friend comes once a week for a few hours.”
Shauni entered the Miss South Yorkshire pageant when she saw it advertised online.
She will join other hopefuls at a Valentine’s Ball-themed final at the Hilton Hotel, Sheffield, on February 14.
The winner will go on to represent the region in Miss England.
n Shauni is seeking a company sponsor to help her make it to the event. If you can help, email her on firstname.lastname@example.org.
