Sheffield can prosper with new defensive centreman Yared Hagos

Hagos is the import replacement for the outgoing Tyler Mosienki - but it is hardly a like-for-like move.

Mosienko was second top scorer for Sheffield before leaving for Denmark. While Hagos has netted just three times in the last two seasons.

Steelers coach Paul Thompson weighed up the needs of the team before plumping for the centreman, saying he thought they had explosive enough goalpower but needed some help in protecting the defensive corps.

Hagos played the role of a third line defensive centre at Krefeld Penguins, in the German DEL, before breaking his hand in January.

He is now completely recovered from that injury and will be assessed across three practices before being put on one of the four lines to play at Edinburgh Capitals on Saturday.

Eventually, he is most likely to play in the middle of the Guillaume Desbiens and Colton Fretter duo.

Thompson said: “We need a centreman who is a two-way player, strong defensively, good on draws, but who can also get points - as he showed earlier in his career in other good leagues. It’s not like-for-like for Mosienko but it’s a question of getting the balance right.

“I felt we did not need a particularly offensive player in that position.”

Hagos, 33, has never broken into double figures in a hockey season in terms of goals, but has been more of an assist-provider.

While not a speed-merchant, the Swede is said to be well balanced and in his element on the penalty kill.
