Sheffield by-election candidate and fathers' rights campaigner sentenced after Elmo police station rooftop protest

A candidate in the Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election has been sanctioned by the courts after protesting on the roof of a police station.

Bobby Smith, an activist for the New Fathers 4 Justice group, climbed onto the roof of Stevenage police station dressed as Sesame Street character Elmo on February 15. He let off a flare and spent several hours there with a campaign banner.

He was found guilty of aggravated trespass at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court yesterday (Friday, April 8) and given a community order to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work. He was also told to pay £620 in costs and a £60 surcharge.

Smith is standing for the Give Me Back Elmo party in the coming Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough by-election.
